Habemus Papam! – was proclaimed yesterday from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica, signifying that the Catholic Church has a new Pope. The new Bishop of Rome is American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who began his Petrine ministry as Pope Leo XIV. The announcement of the new Pope was received with great joy in the Diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza too, and this morning, diocesan bishop Ferenc Palánki offered a Mass of Thanksgiving for the new Pope, concelebrated by the priests present from the parish.

In his homily, Bishop Ferenc stated that it is always the task of the successor of Saint Peter, once converted, to strengthen his brethren. He recalled that the new Pope's first address was already captivating, as he proclaimed the peace that the Risen Christ also proclaimed: „Peace be with you!”

Humanity has a new opportunity to reflect on its life and to consider that the person of the Pope is a sign of God’s love, but this love must be responded to. For it is in vain that the new Pope proclaims the peace of Jesus if we do not respond to this peace.

It is our task to embody in our lives the peace and reconciliation that the Risen Jesus gave us.

The Bishop's sermon can be heard here:

During the Mass, the numerous faithful present prayed for Pope Leo XIV, and at the end of the Mass, the Te Deum and the Papal Anthem were also sung.
