The so-called parish contribution, formerly known as Church tax, must be paid, according to the Code of Canon Law (CIC Canon 518), to the parish within whose territory the faithful have a permanent or temporary domicile. Therefore, belonging to a parish is not arbitrary, but automatic according to one's domicile.
For Holy Mass and other liturgical celebrations, catechesis, and community life, the faithful may, according to their free choice, attend any Catholic church or parish. In these places, they may also make offerings, however, this is not to be confused with the so-called Church tax.
The rate of the Church tax is 1% of net income. Families may, of course, pay their Church tax jointly.
